Ngawang Jungne
Ngawang
Jungne was born in Damshung near Lhasa in 1967. He went to India and
worked as a Tibetan teacher in Dharamsala. He returned to Lhasa to join
the Tibet University to do further studies in the Tibetan language.
Jungne was first arrested on January 12 1994 near the university by the
TAR Public Security Bureau officials, who accused him of being a spy
for the Tibetan government-in-exile. He was detained for almost seven
months at Seitru detention centre where he went through a series of
torture. Jungne was again arrested just two months after his release
from prison. He was sentenced to one year, which was extended to nine
years when he refused to kneel down before an officer named Paljor, the
deputy–in-charge of Drapchi. Jungne will be released at the end of 2004.
