Jadrel Rinpoche Jampa Thinley
Jadrel Rinpoche Jampa Thinley was
born in Namling, Shigatse district situated to the west of Lhasa in
1939. At age 7 he joined the Ensa monastery, and when he reached 15
years he joined the Tashi Lhunpo monastery and remained there for many
years. He was one of the confidants of the late Panchen Lama.
In
1961 Rinpoche went to Beijing, China and studied at the Institute for
Buddhist Studies for five years. In 1966 during the Cultural
Revolution, the Institute for Buddhist Studies was closed. Thus,
Rinpoche returned to Tashi Lhunpo monastery in Tibet.
After
the Cultural Revolution in 1978, Rinpoche was appointed as a member of
the political committee of the Shigatse region. In 1980 he became the
Vice President of the political committee. In 1981 Rinpoche was
appointed a member of the political committee of the Tibet Autonomous
Region. From 1982 to 1985, Rinpoche worked as the Vice Chairman of the
ecclesiastical body of Shigatse region. Rinpoche was also a member of
the Buddhist committee of the Tibet Autonomous Region. He was the head
of the monastic council also.
Rinpoche later was a member of
the 5th committee of the Tibet Autonomous Region. He was also the Vice
Chairman of the political committee of the Shigatse region and a member
of the 7th political committee of Tibet.
Further, he was a
member of the 8th political committee on Tibet. In August 1989, he took
the responsibility of the President in the search committee for the
Panchen Lama.
Initiated by Jadrel Rinpoche, the Tashi Lhunpo
monastery submitted an appeal letter on January 30, 1989 to His
Holiness the Dalai Lama requesting him to find the true reincarnation
of the Panchen Lama. When an official delegation of the Tibetan
government-in-exile was in Beijing, Rinpoche travelled to Beijing to
confer with the delegation and submitted a letter to His Holiness the
Dalai Lama through the delegation.
We have learned that on
March 4 1995, Jadrel Rinpoche went to Beijing to attend the 3rd
political committee meeting. Normally the meeting lasts about ten days.
Rinpoche did not tow the Chinese line in regards to the Panchen Lama’s
reincarnation which resulted in his detention by the Chinese regime.
Rinpoche had a nominal name, but he was more or less kept under house
arrest in Beijing.
On May 14, 1995, Rinpoche was able to leave
Beijing and had planned to come to Tibet via Chendu town by air. When
His Holiness the Dalai Lama announced the name of the reincarnation of
the 10th Panchen Lama, the Chinese regime found out and stopped
Rinpoche from returning to Tibet. On the 18th, he was taken by force
back to Beijing via Chendu. He has been in detention in Beijing with no
one being allowed to meet with Rinpoche.
